On June 28, 2024, the Regional Council of Reunion Island unanimously approved the Regional Waste Prevention and Management Plan (PRPGD), which includes the Regional Action Plan for the Circular Economy (PRAEC), along with its environmental report and annexed documents.
The PRPGD defines Reunion Island’s strategy for reducing, sorting and recovering its waste. Based on a comprehensive assessment of the island’s various waste streams, it addresses the specific challenges of an island territory: limited land availability, dependence on exports, untracked resource deposits and complex logistics.
It sets quantified targets for 2030–2035 to limit landfill disposal, develop local value chains and accelerate the transition toward a circular economy. It covers all types of waste generated by households, businesses, local authorities and public administrations, whether hazardous or non-hazardous, recyclable or non-recyclable.
The regional authority has entrusted La Réunion Développement with coordinating and monitoring the implementation of the action plans, in close collaboration with all local stakeholders.
The open governance of the PRAEC is based on:
- Technical committees led by the Region of Reunion, organized by La Réunion Développement, and bringing together the key partners: the State and ADEME.
Transition working groups, set up for each strategic axes of the PRAEC, with the objective of mapping existing circular economy actions already underway across the territory.
